John Calvin taught that God predetermined certain individuals to be saved in Heaven leaving others to an eternity in Hell. He taught that there was nothing one could do to impact or otherwise change his predetermined destination for good or ill. If this doctrine of predestination is true, then there's no reason for instructing us to live righteously; it would make God a respecter of persons; man's free will has no bearing on his salvation; and there is no need for a final day of Judgment. This...

"Exam Time" are two words that can strike fear in any student. In the same way that we need to examine our knowledge or sit for a dental examination, we must also examine the spiritual man. Examination must be personal since each man is responsible for his sins and will stand before God in Judgment. We must examine ourselves by the appropriate standard: the Word of God. We must make a thorough examination and deal honestly with any sin we uncover. As Paul encouraged the church in...

With Illinois passing a law to specifically add LGTBQ information to their school curriculum, we're again reminded of Satan's efforts to "call evil good and good evil" (Isaiah 5:20). Sexual perversions are not new to our generation. Rather, God has condemned such behaviors throughout the history of the world. He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their perversions, forbade such behaviors in His Law and will judge those who practice them on the Day of Judgment. Like all who sin against...

We can cite countless examples of individuals who paid costly consequences though they were acting sincerely. The younger prophet in 1 Kings 13 suffered death because he failed to obey the LORD. Saul of Tarsus, who later became Paul, persecuted the church out of a clear conscience. Both of these men acted from sincerity, but were sincerely mistaken. When dealing with matters of spiritual importance, God alone is our sole authority. Jesus warned that some would be condemned on the Day of...

The LORD needs Christians who will work for Him, those who desire to seek and save those who are lost. All Christians are commanded to teach the gospel. We see this spirit in Christ as he called his own apostles and we see it in the church in the first century. Teaching is not limited to what happens in the church building but also from house to house. If we're not teaching, then it's possible that we don't have a Christlike love for the souls of those around us.

It was the love of God that caused Him to send His only Son to die for our sins (John 3:16; 15:13). When we consider the tremendous love that God demonstrated for us, it should motivate us and stir us up. The love of God should motivate us to spend more time with Him in prayer, in His Word and in worship to Him. If we better appreciate His love, grace and forgiveness, our lives will be spent in serving Him and growing in love toward Him.

As Christians, we're reminded that God gave us a spirit of love and self-control, not a spirit of fear. Fear causes us to remain quiet when we should speak up. It prevents us from accepting change. In fear, we try to control things that we cannot. Instead, our foundation should be on the love and self-control provided by God. A spirit of boldness in the truth.

To forgive is to cancel or pardon a debt or a wrong committed against you. We serve a forgiving God. Each has sinned against God and deserves death, but He has forgiven us according to the prophetic promises in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, we see those promises fulfilled through the blood of Christ that allows our sins to be washed away. Though God's forgiveness is complete, it's also conditioned upon our ability to forgive others. When we forgive, we demonstrate God's wisdom toward...

When Paul was teaching Agrippa from his imprisonment, Agrippa stated, "In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?" Paul responded, "Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am—except for these chains." We ought to have the same heart and attitude: wanting all to have the blessings we experience as Christians. Do you know why you're a Christian? I'm a Christian because God wants me to be,...

In Revelation, John records God rebuking the church at Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-5). They had become a sick church, but it wasn't due to their inactivity, accepting false teaching or being weary from the word. They were sick because they had left their love for Christ. Thankfully, God shared with them the road to recovery. To recover, they needed to Remember, Repent and Reform.

You may have seen the small print on a coupon or advertisement, "Void where prohibited." It indicates that there are places in the nation where their local laws may invalidate the offer. There's a spiritual parallel to this concept. There are spiritual benefits that are unattainable based on a person's place in life. Prayer is no good when one is living a life of sin. Worship is no good when we are worshiping according to man's traditions rather than the Law of God. Service to God is...

The New Testament records Jesus' public teaching, but it's also interesting to see a glimpse into Jesus' private life. John records the occasion when Lazarus died, one of Jesus' close friends, and we see how Jesus handled it. We saw when he received the awful news, made the trip to Bethany and saw the hopelessness of Lazarus' family. However, we also saw the majesty of Christ as He rose Lazarus from the dead. How about you? Do you believe that Jesus has power over death, that He is our friend...

Like those Christians in Berea, we must always search the scriptures to determine whether the things being taught are true. We must take the Bible in our own hands and determine whether our own teaching is in keeping with God's Word. The Catholic church is among the denominations of men who are teaching and promoting false doctrine. They state that Mary was a perpetual virgin, that Peter was the first pope, that infants are to be baptized and that sprinkling is a sufficient substitute for the...

There was an anti-smoking campaign showing animals with a cigarette hanging out of their mouths. The tag line was, "it looks just as stupid when you do it." We often try to apply a double-standard with sin. It's unacceptable when someone sins, but we excuse ourselves if we're the ones who fall guilty. However, the Word of God teaches that He is no respecter of persons. Sin is wrong regardless of who is committing it. We see this in His dealings with Achan's theft, Judas' betrayal,...

Paul reminded the church in Corinth to retain their focus on the eternal things that cannot be seen in the physical world. When the Israelites overtook Jericho, they had to keep their focus on the LORD's commands. When Peter tried to discourage Jesus from going into Jerusalem, He had to maintain his courage and focus on the LORD's Will. As Christians, we must maintain focus when we suffer for the sake of Christ. Devil will attempt to distract us by every tactic, but we too must remain focused.

In the Proverbs, we're reminded that if we break down when things are tough, it's a reflection on our faith (Proverbs 24:10). Those who are small in faith don't think they should have to go through difficulties. They bitterly blame the LORD, curse His goodness and good people. Great faith must be built when days are sunny so we can endure in the day of darkness. Our LORD endured overwhelming affliction and understands our difficulties. We're likewise called to be strong, have faith in the LORD...

Six centuries before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah foretold that the people of God would receive a new name (Isaiah 62:2). That prophecy is fulfilled in Acts 11:26 when in Antioch, the disciples were first called Christians. Just because someone calls himself a Christian doesn't make it true. Not all good people, religious people, members of churches or believers are Christians.

Man tries to convince himself that God's standards have changed over time. According to God, we're warned not to be carried away by new teachings, stating that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). Sin is literally defined as "missing the mark," falling short of the standard. God's standards have not changed for man and we must take care not to change them on His behalf.

Joshua determined and declared the intention to put God first in his household. Faith isn't something we declare in word alone. Joshua proved his faith in obedience. Jesus said that our love for God must be consuming. It must consume ALL of our heart, our soul and our mind. We must make a full sacrifice for the LORD.

Peter instructed us to cast all of our anxieties on God because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:6). We have been promised that the LORD will bear our burdens if we'll commit our whole being to Him. The same LORD that was able to calm the stormy Sea of Galilee, heal the internal turbulence of the demon-possessed and demonstrate His power over death cares for us. He can calm the storms of our life if we'll turn our cares over to Him.

We like it when others serve us, but may hesitate to serve others. However, true followers of Jesus are servants. Servants are obedient, humble and loyal and there is no greater example of servitude than Jesus. He suffered as the sacrificial lamb of God for our sins. Why did Jesus leave Heaven to suffer for us? Because there was no other way that we could be saved from our sins than to give Himself on the cross.

Each of the four gospels provide a witness account to Jesus' resurrection. The resurrection stands as evidence of His claims to be the Christ, the Son of God. His resurrection also demonstrates that you can be saved from your sins. As mediator, you have access to the Father and eternal life through His blood.

When we consider all that our LORD endured, we develop a greater appreciation for Him and a deeper love. It wasn't merely the crucifixion that was difficult, but even the road that led to the cross. We consider his suffering alone in the garden of Gethsemane, his betrayal by one of his closest companions, the scourging he endured and bearing His cross on the road to Golgotha. He knowingly endured these things because of His love for each of us.

We see examples of the first century church worshiping God together. Their focus was not on each other, but on the God Whom they served. As we prepare for our Gospel Meeting, there are things we can do to prepare the way for others to hear the gospel. We need to attend together, arrive early and be friendly when we meet people. We need to invite others and come prepared to worship with them.

Many sermons have been presented on the concept of having a faith "outside the box," but in the most literal sense, Israel had faith in a box. We read of examples where they treated the ark of the covenant as a talisman, a magic box. We too can misplace our faith: in ourselves, our heritage, in outward appearance or some faith that we had in the past. Our faith must be in God and in Him alone.

In the Psalms, we can read the prayer and song of Moses crying out to the LORD for His help. The faithful have the confident privilege of prayer to the God and Creator of life who is always there. We need to remember our frailty and the separation of sin. Prayer is a gift to treasure every day.

Christians are commanded to add brotherly kindness to their faith. The word for brotherly kindness is used frequently in the scriptures. It communicates the familial affection a Christian should have for those with a common faith. It's a love that recognizes the difference between the church and the world. It stresses the spiritual blessings we share in common and is an attribute of discipleship in Christ.

It's good for us to stop and emphasize the honor and respect we ought to have for our mothers. By God's plan, mothers have always been considered special. Her role in the home is one of great importance. No woman should feel inferior for taking seriously her role as a mother and manager of the home. The Bible commands us to honor our mothers by obedience. Mothers have played a very important role throughout God's plan in scriptures. Samuel's mother, Hannah, cared for him while serving Eli the...

Godliness is piety towards God derived from a deep, reverential religious fear. It's not merely good conduct toward God, but an attitude of being constantly before and with God. Godliness expresses itself in the conduct of our lives. It's evident in our dress, our service to God and man, in our concern for fellow man and our respect for authority. Though godliness is accompanied by persecution, we will be delivered from it for even greater gain.

Christ reminded His disciples that the world would hate them because they were not of the world (John 15:19). As the world further embraces homosexuality as an acceptable alternative, we must be vigilant to turn to the Word of God as our standard. What does the Bible say about homosexuality? Jesus and other New Testament writers clearly condemned homosexuality as a sin. We must not condone the sin, but we must love the sinner. We express love as Christ did for us: teaching the truth and seeking...

Peter is a disciple with whom we can relate. Not only was Peter full of passion for our LORD, but we see him fail in the same ways we do today. Like Peter, we begin to sink when we take our eyes off the LORD. Sometimes we're falling asleep when we should be helping others bear their burdens. We sin and deny Christ as he did. Most importantly though, we can have hope as Peter did.

When we read about Job, Esther, Joshua, David and Jeremiah, we see servants of God who were faced with difficult circumstances where it would have been tempting to give up. We too will face circumstances that cause us to lose heart: lack of faith, unjust criticism, religious division and the trials of life. However, we receive strength when we bear others' burdens, when we use the full armor of God, when we work to build others up and when we press toward the Goal.

A wise man said, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7). Our thoughts and attitudes impact our words and our actions. We'll look at three areas where we need to align our thoughts and hearts with God. We need to take on God's attitude about life, about work and about sin.

For Easter, most denominations host special services and programs. People who generally wouldn't darken the door of a church building even come to their annual service. However, Easter is a man-made holiday that isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible. We'll discuss whether man has the authority to ordain his own methods of worship. What God has commanded is for His people to remember the death of His Son on the first day of every week by partaking of the LORD's Supper.

The sport of running requires a great measure of endurance. Each runner must run his own, individual race and yet he runs with and against others. This is similar to the Christian's life, but each runner who finishes is a winner. Like a runner, we have to master our circumstances and look to Jesus, away from other distractions. We'll face difficulties, but must always be mindful of the reward that awaits us!

Sometimes, we can bring others to Christ by the way we live our lives. Specifically, Peter wrote to women married to unbelieving men, instructing them to dress up the inner person rather than focusing on the outer, perishing beauty (1 Peter 3). Every Christian is to have a positive influence on the world. We can only have the influence we need to have when we dress up the inner man.

No one wants to feel foolish in front of others, but can you imagine how foolish one would feel if he reached the end of his life only to realize he was wrong the entire time. Men are playing the fool when they say there is no God, when they mock what is sinful and live their own standards. We're foolish when we leave God out of our plans and live unfaithfully. We are the most foolish when we've not prepared ourselves to meet God on the day of judgment.

Do you believe God? Notice, this is distinct from asking whether you believe IN God. Do you believe God when He says that all sin is sin? Do you believe that He really cares for you as He says? Do you believe Him that Jesus died for everyone? Do you believe that Jesus' blood was enough to erase your sins? Do you believe that you can live faithfully as God says you can?

The Bible tells us that we can be partakers of the Divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). We do so by adding characteristics, like patience, to our faith. Patience is waiting with hope, keeping loyal to one's faith. There are many threats to our faith, so we must develop our patience in both endurance and persistence.

Though the majority believe that premarital sex is acceptable, God has specifically condemned the activity. Satan has a successfully secured a foothold in society and it's resulted in unwanted pregnancies, murderous abortions and damaged homes. What's worse is that souls will be lost due to their actions. We need to read what the Bible has to say about fornication and conform ourselves to God's will.

The Word of God is true and righteous. It is the standard to which we must conform our lives to be at peace with God. Satan would lease us to believe that there cannot be a universal right and wrong. He wants us to believe that each situation may call for a different "right" response. However, God is the standard and defines truth. Wrong is wrong regardless whether you're caught or whether you believe you're doing it for the right reasons. Wrong isn't dependent on what others are...

Determination is an essential characteristic that we consider in athletes when we see the obstacles they have to overcome. However, when we consider the stakes of our eternal salvation, its even more critical for the Christian to be determined. As a Christian, determination means that we will set goals in accordance with God's Will. We'll ignore distractions that prevent us from achieving those goals, refuse to be discouraged by others and will willingly face problems head on.

Jesus freely talked about the costs of discipleship when He responded to His disciples in Luke 9:57-62. Being a disciple of the LORD means serving Him singularly and serving Him at the cost of home and family. Discipleship isn't something to toy with or do half-heartedly. It requires complete devotion to the LORD and more than a short-lived, impulsive response to God. Those who are not truly devoted to the LORD will find an excuse for their behavior, but His true servants will follow at all...

The "temperance" that is taught in the scriptures is more than merely having self-control. More specifically it is self-control as directed by God's Word. It's precisely why Peter talks about the need to add self-control to our knowledge of God (2 Peter 1:5-7). Although man is capable of abusing his power and ability, the LORD calls us to control our will. Knowledge alone causes one to be puffed up with pride, but temperance requires us to control our emotions and put God first. We...

The nature of Jesus Christ has been debated for many years. Some believe that Jesus was nothing more than a man while living on Earth, but the Bible teaches that our LORD and Savior was God in the flesh. He possessed and used His divine attributes while on earth. He received worship, demonstrated His glory, showed His omniscience and had those powers intrinsic to Deity.

We must add Knowledge to our faith. Knowledge means that are aware of God's word, that we can understand it and apply it's teaching to make changes in our lives. We need knowledge so we will not be deceived by Satan. We need it to be zealous, convicted of sin and resist temptation. We need knowledge to be stable in our faith. To gain knowledge, we must first have a love for the truth and seek to know it. We must be determined to obey, continue to investigate the scriptures and contemplate...

Paul wrote to those in Rome, "If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all" (Romans 12:18). As Christians, we have the responsibility to seek peace. To do so, we need to be courteous and polite. We need to cultivate a pleasing disposition, control our temper and control our tongue. We must learn to love people as Christ did: universally, selflessly, sacrificially and personally.

We see the supernatural power of Jesus when He rebuked the winds and the waves. Why is it then that we fail to trust the LORD to calm the storms of our lives? From time to time, our lives are often like the tempest of the sea. Similar to the apostles, we too frequently respond to those in fear, failing to trust the LORD. When we cry out for salvation, our pleas will be heard and we too will declare, "The winds and the waves shall obey Thy will: peace, be still"

The prophet Isaiah wrote, "Woe to him who strives with his Maker" (Isaiah 45:9). Man has the free will to serve God or fight against Him. Inasmuch as we learn from those who served God, we also learn from those who have refused to do so. We can look at the lives of the Pharaoh of Egypt and Goliath to see the results of those who fight against the LORD. We also see repentance through the lives of Jonah and Saul of Tarsus following their fight. Will we also fight against God by...

Peter wrote about how to attain salvation (2 Peter 1:1-11). He instructed us to supplement our faith with other godly characteristics. Virtue is the idea of moral courage. It's needed to fear God, to confess our sins, to rebuke sin and live a godly life. We have multiple examples of virtue throughout the scriptures: Moses; Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego; Daniel; Stephen and Paul.
